Prof. N.D. Jayaweera has been appointed as the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Moratuwa is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor N. D. Jayaweera as the Head of the Department, effective 1st March 2026. He succeeds Professor Ranjith Amarasinghe, whose exemplary leadership over the past three years has significantly strengthened and advanced the department’s academic, research, and professional standing. The department sincerely appreciates Professor Amarasinghe’s dedicated service and valuable contributions during his tenure.

Professor Jayaweera obtained his BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa and later pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, where he earned an MSc in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. He subsequently completed his PhD in Aerospace Manufacturing and Assembly at the same institution. Prior to joining the academic staff at the University of Moratuwa, Prof. Jayaweera worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham (UK), where he was involved in several internationally funded research projects with leading aerospace industries such as Airbus and Rolls-Royce, Volvo Aero corporation and Bombardier Aerospace. His research contributions focused on robotic assembly of complex structures, aerospace manufacturing technologies, intelligent sensor systems, advanced tooling and fixturing, process optimization, rapid prototyping, and automotive engineering applications.

Professor Jayaweera has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports. In recognition of his significant research contributions, he has received several Awards of Excellence for Outstanding Research Performance from the University of Moratuwa, as well as international awards and recognitions for his scholarly work. At the University of Moratuwa, Prof. Jayaweera has played a significant role in teaching, research, and curriculum development in areas such as manufacturing engineering, machine element design, aeronautical engineering, robotics, and advanced manufacturing systems. He has also contributed to the development of the Aeronautical Engineering stream and the establishment of related laboratory facilities within the Faculty of Engineering.

In addition to his academic work, he actively contributes to the engineering profession through technical committees, research review panels, curriculum development initiatives, and international collaborations. He has also served as Director of the Centre for Advanced Mechatronic Systems at the University of Moratuwa and continues to mentor undergraduate and postgraduate researchers. As Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Jayaweera is committed to strengthening academic excellence, fostering innovation in engineering education and research, and enhancing collaboration with industry and international partners to advance the impact of mechanical engineering education in Sri Lanka and beyond.
