Prof. Sujeeva Setunge, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of RMIT, Australia, visits the Department of Civil Engineering

Prof. Mrs. Sujeeva Setunge, who is an alumna of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa, is a world-renowned academic and currently the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the STEM college of RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. Prof Mrs. Sethunga visited the Department on the 19th January 2022 and, in parallel, conducted an interactive online session for the research students of the Department. She was welcomed to the Department by the Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Prof Mrs. Chintha Jayasinghe, on behalf of the university and the event was organized by Dr Chandana Siriwardana. Prof. Mrs. Sethunge pioneered in initiating RMIT-Sri Lanka Split PhD program.

TRF 2020 conference organized by the Department of Civil Engineering is featured as a special edition in "The Engineer" Journal

Transport Research Forum (TRF) is an annual conference organized by the Transportation Engineering Division of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa. The prime objective of this conference is to create a platform for researchers in the transportation field to build up their research careers and to share their research findings with other colleagues and the industry. Practitioners, researchers, and academics, including a number of international experts in the areas of Highway Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Planning, are the participants for this event. In addition, representatives from the industry and the related government institutions are also invited every year.

Surveying Camp of the Department of Civil Engineering

The annual residential surveying camp of the Department of Civil Engineering was successfully held for the 17- batch at ‘KITI-IWM- Kothmale International Training Institute of Irrigation and Water Management’ from 16th-29th January 2022. This surveying camp was held in two slots for the final year undergraduates while maintaining health regulations with the support of the academic and non-academic staff of the Department.

Unveiling of the Photographs of two former Heads of Department

Photographs of two former heads of the Department of Civil Engineering, Prof. Saman Bandara and Prof. Athula Kulathilake, were unveiled at the department board room on 5th January 2022. The unveiling ceremony was witnessed by the academic and non-academic staff of the department. The current Head Department of Civil Engineering Prof (Mrs) Chintha Jayasinghe and Dean Faculty of Engineering Prof Nalin Wickramarachchi appreciated the exceptional service provided by the two former heads to the department. A plaque was also awarded to the two former heads of the department. The new year calibration of the department followed the unveiling ceremony.

Workshop by two renowned Professors from the University of Melbourne and California State University

A workshop on opportunities for higher studies was organized for the Research students of the Department of Civil Engineering on 4th January at the department premises. This workshop was conducted by two world-renowned Academics, Prof. Priyan Mendis from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Prof. Rupa Purasinghefrom California State University, Los Angeles.

Highway Engineering Society at the Department of Civil Engineering organized another “Chat with an Engineer” event

“Chat with an Engineer – Session 3” organized by the Highway Engineering Society (HES) – Student Chapter, University of Moratuwa was successfully held on 18th December 2021 via Zoom platform with the participation of civil engineering undergraduates around the country. This was the 3rd consecutive session organized by the HES – Student Chapter, University of Moratuwa, focusing on providing an opportunity for enthusiastic civil engineering undergraduates to acquire guidance from industry experts to broaden their knowledge on highway engineering.

Skill Up with CES Webinar 5 - by Dr. Rajeev Ruparathna from the University of Windsor, Canada

The Civil Engineering Society (CES) of University of Moratuwa initiated the "Skill up with CES" webinar series with the aim of providing opportunities for the students to meet the expert and renowned professionals from all around the world. Within two months from the initiation, five successful webinars were carried out under several major topics.

SKILL-UP WITH CES – Webinar 4 - by Director RDC (Pvt) Ltd

An session on“Buildability and Effective Project Management Techniques for Highrise Building Construction” was conducted as the 4th webinar under the program “SKILL-UP WITH CES- Webinar Series” on 28th November, 2021 from 6.00 p.m. onwards via Zoom platform. The facilitator of this session was Eng. Samitha Jayakody, who is a Charted Engineer and currently Director of, RDC (Pvt) Ltd and a Visiting Lecturer at University of Moratuwa.
