Road Safety Awareness Program for school students organized by the Highway Engineering Society of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa

“Road Safety Awareness Program”, an event annually organized by the Highway Engineering Society of the University of Moratuwa to educate school students about road safety, was held this year on 6th August 2022 and 13th August 2022 with the collaboration of “Vidumagata Sawiyak” organization. This program was funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) through the iRoad Project of the Road Development Authority (RDA).

The first program, which happened on 6th August 2022, was held at the Meegahakiula Maha Vidyalaya for the school students of the Meegahakiula Educational Zone. The program consisted of two sessions. The first session was designed to educate students about road safety, and the second was a motivational and career guidance program. Prof. W.K. Mampearachchi, the Guest Lecturer for the program delivered a lecture on road safety, and the first session comprised interactive sessions and video documentaries to enhance awareness about road safety among the audience. In the second half of the program, students embraced a guidance program to make decisions about their careers and an inspirational program to improve their performance and productivity.

The program was conducted for a second day on 13th August 2022, at the Agalawaththa Mihindu Central College, extending the benefits of this program to students of the Agalawaththa Mathugama Educational Zone. The Guest Lecturer for this program was Prof. W.K. Mampearachchi, and the program had the same structure as the first program.

The event received positive and pleasing feedback, and the post-questionnaire survey affirmed the program had significantly influenced students' awareness about road safety and attitude towards future goals and ambitions.
