An invited speech at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Head Quarters in Manila by Dr H.R. Pasindu of the Department of Civil Engineering

Dr. H. R. Pasindu delivered an invited speech on road crash data analysis in Sri Lanka at the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) Annual Meeting held at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Head Quarters in Manila. The event was held from 11-13th October 2022.

Workshop on extreme sea levels and coastal flooding projections for Sri Lanka

IHE Delft (Netherlands), in partnership with the University of Moratuwa and SLASS, conducted a workshop on extreme sea levels (ESL) and coastal flooding projections for Sri Lanka at SLASS auditorium in Colombo 7. The event was held on October 26 with the participation of the Deputy Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Sri Lanka and Maldives. Prof Roshanka Ranasinghe (IHE Delft/Deltares/University of Twente), presented the ESL projections for the entire Sri Lankan coast and highlighted potential techniques for coastal flooding protection for Sri Lanka.

Emergency Response Platform "Dis-Map" developed at the Department of Civil Engineering was featured at the Seventh Asian Preparedness Partnership Regional Steering Committee Meeting

The Seventh Asian Preparedness Partnership Regional Steering Committee Meeting (APPRSC) took place on 24th August 2022. The partnership’s key stakeholders gathered in Bangkok, Thailand to focus on regional updates. These reflections included appraising the key tools and guidelines that have been developed as well as South-South knowledge sharing through the regional technical working groups (RTWG) and digital platforms.

A Smart Classroom for Civil Engineering Students

A well-equipped Smart Classroom consisting of the newest devices related to smart learning aspects is now handed to the Transportation Engineering Division, Civil Engineering Department of the University of Moratuwa, funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. The classroom specifically promotes visual learning using smart technology devices such as an Interactive whiteboard, a Smart Podium and Motion Sensor Cameras. It facilitates carrying out lecture sessions smoothly for both in-class and online participants simultaneously with many teacher-assisting functions. The Smart Interactive Board consists of a completely interactive screen with many inbuilt tools that could be used in explaining concepts, drawing graphs and images, annotating hand notes onscreen, and highlighting required sections in a lecture slide.

A staff development program for the non-academic staff of the Department of Civil Engineering

A staff development program was conducted for the non-academic staff of the Department of Civil Engineering on office automation. The program was conducted by Mr Charaka Satharasinghe with the support of the Head, Department of Civil Engineering Professor Chintha Jayasinghe and the In-charge of the Computer Resources Unit, Professor Lalith Rajapakshe. The event started on 31st August 2020 and the main focus was to develop the IT skills of the department of civil engineering staff members. The course was well planned to equip the non-academic staff with the essential IT skills and to the ability to access common IT facilities offered by the University and online tools

Road Safety Awareness Program for school students organized by the Highway Engineering Society of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa

“Road Safety Awareness Program”, an event annually organized by the Highway Engineering Society of the University of Moratuwa to educate school students about road safety, was held this year on 6th August 2022 and 13th August 2022 with the collaboration of “Vidumagata Sawiyak” organization. This program was funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) through the iRoad Project of the Road Development Authority (RDA).
