Professor Jun-ichi Kodama

Topic: Interpretation of rock slope deformation based on field measurement and numerical simulation

Biography: Professor Jun-ichi Kodama is a renowned expert in rock mechanics and environmental geotechnics, specializing in the behaviour of geological materials under extreme conditions. A Professor at Hokkaido University’s Division of Sustainable Resources Engineering, he leads cutting-edge research at the Rock Mechanics Laboratory, advancing our understanding of rock durability and slope stability in cold and variable environments.

His work focuses on critical areas such as freeze-thaw resilience, sub-zero mechanical properties, long-term strength degradation, and environmentally responsive slope evaluation methods; contributing to safer infrastructure and sustainable resource development in challenging terrains.

Internationally engaged, Prof. Kodama served as a Visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales, fostering global collaboration and knowledge exchange in geomechanics and mining science.

Beyond the lab, Prof. Kodama’s research has shaped academic discourse through numerous high-impact publications, widely cited for their significance in both theoretical modelling and field applications. His contributions continue to influence engineering practices across cold-region geotechnics and environmental rock mechanics.
