The Department of Earth Resources Engineering, University of Moratuwa has been successfully conducting a certificate level course since 1973 to train persons in Gemmology. The course provides appropriate academic qualification and skills to people who wish to engage in the fields of Gemmology and for those who are already employed in these fields to whom this is an opportunity to advance their careers. At the request of past students, the relevant trading organizations and government Institutes, the Department has now decided to commence Certificate Courses in Gemmology & Geology. Since the Certificate Courses are conducted by one of the leading universities in Sri Lanka with qualified academic staff and with a well constituted course curriculum, it is comparable with reputed international Certificate courses.

Major objectives of the courses are to train the persons who are in the Gemmology, Geology fields or related fields and those who are willing to enter such fields. These courses provide academic qualification and skills to engage in the fields of Gemmology or Geology and those who are already employed in these filed to advance their careers. Gemmology certificate holders are can obtain membership of Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka (M.G.A) and Gemmologcal Association of University of Moratuwa. (G.A.U.M.)
