The annual “Suhastha” program has been recently conducted successfully from 17th April to 21st April 2023. Under the guidance of the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Prof. (Mrs.) Chintha Jayasinghe, Dr. Loshaka Perera and Dr. Pasindu Weerasinghe, the Civil Engineering Society (CES) at the Department organized this program.
The program was carried out with the support of civil engineering students of the Intake 2020 batch and aimed to improve the educational facilities of seven selected schools across different districts in Sri Lanka. Four schools were selected from Badulla, one from Matara, and two from Jaffna, including Jaffna's Vatharawattai Vignesara Vidyalayam and Puththakalady Sri Vishnu Vidyalayam, Matara's Naimbala Bandaththara Maha Vidyalaya, and Badulla's Aluthwela South School, Janananda National School, Kahagolla Navodya Maha Vidyalaya, and Ellegama Vidyalaya.
Seminars were conducted for all these schools, followed by a book donation program for their libraries. Additionally, the repairs and painting works of class halls at two schools, namely Badulla's Aluthwela South School and Ellegama Vidyalaya were also carried out by the 2020 batch students.
The 2020 batch students dedicated the last week of their vacation to this program and did an exceptional job in assisting these schools. The project's success is an excellent example of how students can positively impact the community through their skills and knowledge. The principals, staff and students of respective schools have expressed their gratitude to the undergraduate students, staff, and everyone who contributed to the project's success while the department appreciated the CES and all who supported the “Suhastha” program activities helping the needy students.
