Successful Completion of the 20-Batch Survey Camp in the Department of Civil Engineering

The Survey Camp for the 20-Batch, conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, was successfully carried out in two phases with the support of the both academic and non-academic staff of the department. Phase 1 was conducted at the department premises from July 23rd to 26th, 2024, to refresh the existing knowledge of students, while assessing their proficiency with surveying instruments and methodologies. During this period, students were not only engaged in recalling theories, but were also introduced to advanced surveying technologies such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) surveying and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), through specialized sessions led by industry professionals.

Building upon the knowledge acquired during Phase 1, Phase 2 was commenced on 10th August, 2024, at the scenic Samanalawewa Samurdhi Training Centre. Students were divided into twelve groups, each tasked with completing one of six unique projects over six consecutive days. These projects mirrored real-world civil engineering applications such as road surveying, building construction, and re-development. The goal was to combine traditional surveying methods with modern design principles, allowing students to tackle real-life problems, while enhancing their understanding of project design and the practical uses of surveying.

The success of the 20-batch Survey Camp underscores the commitment of the department to fostering a learning environment that integrates foundational knowledge with cutting-edge advancements in surveying. By emphasizing practical exposure and project-based learning, the survey camp has effectively equipped students with the skills needed to meet the evolving challenges of the surveying profession, ensuring they are prepared for the future of civil engineering.
