Department of Civil Engineering Concludes “EXMO 2023” with Remarkable Success

“EXMO 2023”, the flagship Engineering Exhibition organized by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa, was held on the 27th, 28th, and 29th of July 2023 within the university premises under the theme "Innovate, Inspire, Engineer the Future".

The Department of Civil Engineering also joined the event unveiling their expertise across six specialized fields: structural engineering, hydraulic engineering, transportation and surveying, environmental engineering, construction management, and geotechnical engineering. The main exhibit of the department featured a remarkable physical model envisioning a sustainable city, emphasizing eco-conscious urban planning. Also, there were more than 25 exhibit stalls showcasing the department's areas of expertise, ongoing undergraduate and postgraduate research and the its state-of-the-art facilities. Among the exhibition stalls, several notable displays garnered attention, including the innovative lightweight hybrid multi-story building, water treatment plant model, landslide model, prototype illustrating reservoir operation, drone surveying, bitumen testing in road construction and building energy modelling.

In addition to the above, one of the highlighted events within the department was the "Building Clinic," conducted in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Sectional Committee of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL). This initiative aimed to provide expert advice and ingenious solutions for civil engineering challenges faced by the general public, emphasizing the department commitment to community engagement. Furthermore, the "Career Fair" facilitated valuable networking opportunities for the final year undergraduate students with well-established companies in the Civil Engineering sector. Additionally, the department featured a series of enlightening guest lectures with experts in each field sharing their knowledge and insights, and enriching the educational aspect of the exhibition.

On the final day of the exhibition, following its successful conclusion, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Prof. (Mrs.) Chintha Jayasinghe expressed that the event had offered an exceptional platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and potential collaborations. Also, she extended her heartfelt appreciation to all the dedicated academic and non-academic staff, as well as the enthusiastic and committed students, for their exceptional efforts in pursuing the department goals during EXMO 2023.
