Civil Engineering Research Symposium (CERS) 2023, organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa was held successfully on the 27th of September 2023 at the Civil Engineering Auditorium.
The symposium showcased the latest and novel research activities undertaken by undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Department.
Mr. Daniel Bood, the Chargé d’Affaires (acting) at the Canadian High Commission graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and a special keynote speech on “An insight into the Advances of Geotechnical Engineering in Landslides and Soil Improvement Technologies in Sri Lanka” was delivered by Eng. (Dr.) Asiri Karunawardena, Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) of Sri Lanka.
The symposium is dedicated specifically to four retiring professors: Professor Malik Ranasinghe, Professor Athula Kulathilaka, Professor Anura Nanayakkara, and Professor Ruwan Weerasekera, in recognition of their valuable contributions to the Civil Engineering Department.
The symposium proceedings produced as a book of abstracts has been published, which comprises the findings of the latest Civil Engineering undergraduate research projects, conducted under different Civil Engineering themes, including Structural, Geotechnical, Hydraulic, Construction, Environmental, and Transportation Engineering. A selected set of abstracts were physically presented by students at the symposium.

A 3-Minute Thesis (3-MT) Challenge for postgraduate students was also organized in parallel, demonstrating their latest research achievements in a creative manner. The winners of the competition were announced at the symposium, and they were awarded certificates.
