LBS2ITS

Transportation Engineering Division, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa is a proud partner of Erasmus+ grant recipient for Curricula Enrichment Delivered through the Application of Location-based Services to Intelligent Transport Systems [LBS2ITS]

The Technische Universität Wien (TUW), Austria and Department of Town & Country Planning and Transport Engineering Group, Department of Civil Engineering jointly received an Erasmus+ funded project titled “Curricula Enrichment delivered through the Application of Location-based Services to Intelligent Transport Systems / LBS2ITS”.

The overarching aim of the project is higher education curriculum development to produce professionals who are equipped to improve the liveability of urban and provisional areas in the partner country. This will be achieved through delivering an enhanced curriculum and new didactic practices for Location-based Services (LBS) and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Sri Lankan universities. The benefit will be to achieve safer, more reliable, more comfortable, more environment-friendly and energy-efficient integrated multimodal transportation solutions at regional and urban level with direct impact on the economy and the society. The project team has identified the key problems in the urban planning and transport sector and the associated difficulties in the higher education in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the specific objectives of LBS2ITS project are (1) to establish a regional cooperation network in LBS to ITS education, (2) to modernize existing and develop new LBS and smart transportation course modules, (3) to train teachers through focused training courses on the project theme, (4) to modernize equipment including digital resource kits for student interaction, (5) to introduce Problem-based Learning (PBL) pedagogy and e-learning tools, (6) to strengthen the interaction and promote collaboration between HEIs and stakeholders in the field, (7) to enhance outreach and broaden the employability opportunities of students at international markets, and (8) to implement quality assurance procedures in LBS to ITS education. Accordingly, the project will enhance postgraduate and undergraduate programmes conducted by Department of Town & Country Planning and Transport Engineering Group, Department of Civil Engineering by improving lecture materials, physical and online learning resources and capacities of the academic and technical staff member. Apart from the Technische Universität Wien (TUW) the main coordinator of the project two EU universities namely Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), Germany; National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece and three SL universities namely Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL), University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) and General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) will be participating in this project as a project partner.

The project will be led by the staff members of Transport Engineering Group, Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Town & Country Planning.
