Department of Earth Resources Engineering Celebrates 50 Years of Excellence

On 21 December 2024, the Department of Earth Resources Engineering commemorated its fiftieth anniversary, highlighting its legacy in education, research, and graduate achievements. The occasion celebrated the department’s historical significance while anticipating a future of innovation and excellence.

The celebration was graced by dignitaries, including departmental heads, faculty deans, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Alumnus. Notable members who were part of the department from its initiation, such as Founder Professor A.R.T. De Silva from the School of Applied Science, Emeritus Professor W.L.W. Fernando, the first head of the Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering, and Emeritus Professor P.G.R. Dharmaratne, the longest-serving staff member and most senior alumni, shared their experiences and reflections on the department’s evolution. Their insights emphasized the department’s significant journey and transformation.

A keynote address was presented by Lucy McClean, Managing Director, Forelight Advisory and Chair, Women in Mining and Resources Australia, focusing on “Looking Forward - ESG and Mining”, which emphasized the critical role of sustainability and ESG practices in the mining sector’s future.

The event also honored all former department heads, staff and industry partners for their significant contributions to its development and success. Further, students contributed to the celebration by displaying their artistic abilities, bringing an extra layer of excitement and joy to the event, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees. As the Department of Earth Resources Engineering progresses into its next fifty years, its commitment to excellence and innovation remains central to its mission in shaping the future of mining and earth resources engineering.
