Training Program on “Carbon Footprint Assessment for Sustainable Process Industry”

Training Program on “Carbon Footprint Assessment for Sustainable Process Industry” was successfully held on 16th and 17th December 2023 at the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka with the presence of 72 Active Participants representing a Wide Spectrum of Organizations, Institutes, Entrepreneurs, etc. 

The Training Program was very Interactive and covered the Key Topics with Worked Examples, Case Studies, and Group Discussions on Life Cycle Thinking, Product Carbon Footprint, Organizational Carbon Footprint, Carbon Neutrality, Carbon Crediting, Carbon Trading, etc.

Dr. Mahinsasa Rathnayake was the Coordinator and the Resource Person for this Two-Day Training Program who greatly enhanced the Participants’ Knowledge and Understanding on Different Methodologies and cleared most of the Case-Specific Practical doubts that the Participants had on in Carbon Footprint Assessment in their Products and Organizations.

Prof. Shantha Maduwage Egodage, Head - Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Welcomed the Participants and graced the Commencement of the Training program. Every Participant received a Certificate of Participation issued by the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.

A Guest Lecture Session on "Sustainable Process Improvement in Manufacturing Industries" was held for the 2023/24 Intake of MSc/PG Diploma in Sustainable Process Engineering on Sunday, 22nd October 2023 at the Department Premises. Special Thanks to Mr. Indika Kumara - Head of Manufacturing, Unilever Sri Lanka Ltd for conducting the session as the resource person.

During this session, MSc candidates learnt new knowledge on sustainability practices in the industries and their practical implementation.

The Practical Workshop on "Steam Energy Assessment"

Sincere Thanks to the Factory Management and Engineers at AEN, especially the General Manager, Mr. Tharaka Liyana Arachchi for hosting and facilitating the practical workshop. Special Gratitude to Forbes Marshall Lanka (Pvt) Ltd with their Engineer, Mr. Dhanushka Dasanayake for providing testing facilities and guiding the MSc Students to take the necessary measurements to calculate and analyze the Boiler Efficiency.

Prof. Shantha Amarasinghe and Dr. Mahinsasa Rathnayake participated in this activity as the Lecturers.

 

MSc/PG Diploma in Sustainable Process Engineering - 2023 Intake Candidates visited the Wastewater Treatment Plant at Ratmalana/Moratuwa

MSc/PG Diploma in Sustainable Process Engineering - 2023 Intake Candidates visited the Wastewater Treatment Plant at Ratmalana/Moratuwa, operated by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board on 27th August 2023. They explored a Large Scale Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant with Practical Learning Experience.

Sincere Thanks to all the Managers, Engineers, and Technicians at the National Water Supply and Drainage Board for facilitating the visit by spending their invaluable time during the weekend with sharing their knowledge and guiding the MSc candidates throughout the visit.

Prof. P.G. Rathnasiri and Dr. Mahinsasa Rathnayake participated in this plant visit, representing the Lecture Panel.

The Practical Workshop Part 01 on "Energy Assessment" in the MSc/PG Diploma in Sustainable Process Engineering Course was successfully conducted for the 2023 Intake Students with the site measurement work at Harumi Holdings Pvt Ltd, Horana on 19th August 2023.

Training Program on "Wastewater & Sludge Treatment, Waste Valorization and Life Cycle Assessment

Training Program on "Wastewater & Sludge Treatment, Waste Valorization and Life Cycle Assessment" was successfully held at the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa on 01st & 02nd July 2023 with 50+ participants from various industries and organizations in Sri Lanka.

This Training Program was organized as a Knowledge Dissemination Activity of EUSL-TESS Project co-funded by Erasmus+ with the presence of Professors from Three European Universities, such as USN-Norway, NOVA-Portugal, and DTU-Denmark as the Resource Persons. Prof. Mahinsasa Narayana is the UoM Representative in the EUSL-TESS Project.

This Training Program was coordinated under the MSc/PG Diploma in Sustainable Process Engineering Taught Course by the Course Coordinator Dr. Mahinsasa Rathnayake. Prof. P.G. Rathnasiri from DCPE-UoM was also a Resource Person in this Training Program. The Training Program was declared open by the Head of the Department, Prof. Shantha Maduwage Egodage

Guest Lecture on Sustainable Agro-waste Utilization by Prof. Sachin Mandavgane from VINIT, India

Special Online Guest Lecture on "Agro-waste Utilization: Few Case Studies" was held in the Course Program of MSc/PG Diploma in Sustainable Process Engineering on 14.08.2022.

The Resource Person was Prof. Sachin Mandavgane, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, VINIT, Nagpur, India. Prof. Sachin shared a part of his research expertise in Zero-waste Projects.

The Course Coordinator, Dr. Mahinsasa Rathnayake participated in the session and thanked Prof. Sachin Mandavgane and the audience of the MSc students for contributing an interactive and interesting session with new knowledge sharing.

A Special Workshop on "Research Thesis Writing Skills & Professional Ethics" was successfully conducted for the 2021/22 intake of MSc/PGD in Sustainable Process Engineering Course on 21.01.2023.

In this session, the MSc candidates gained practical knowledge and skills on Research Thesis Writing and the important tips of Professional Ethics for their future Professional Development.

The Course Coordinator, Dr. Mahinsasa Rathnayake, was the Resource Person for this Special Workshop. He shared his practical experiences on the ethical behavior in the industry and the research writing styles in thesis writing & publications with the participants for this workshop
