industrial training

The B.Sc. in Chemical and Process Engineering program includes a mandatory Industrial Training module, where undergraduates should undergo a minimum Training period of 24-weeks, placed in an industry related to chemical and process applications. To enhance this experience, various webinars and workshops are conducted during Semester 5 on topics like CV preparation, interview skills, occupational safety, environmental aspects, and engineering practice. The Module CH3880 - Engineer and Society in Semester 5 also covers important areas to be aware by an undergraduate before placing as a trainee in the industry.

The goal of Industrial Training Module is to apply theoretical knowledge, improve practical and management skills, and develop interpersonal skills and professional ethics. Emphasis is placed on areas like product manufacturing, waste treatment, process design, and problem-solving.

Each undergraduate must ensure that they select an industrial placement that is possible to achieve the learning outcomes (LOs) through their industrial training program as follows.

  • Apply knowledge and principles of chemical and process engineering.
  • Understand industrial systems, procedures, and practices. (i.e., administration, financial, general management, logistics, HSE, legal, etc.)
  • Design solutions for industrial/engineering problems in the industry using modern tools and techniques.
  • Develop soft skills, such as teamwork, communication, time management, leadership, and understanding of professional ethics. During the stay in an industry placement, the undergraduate is supposed to maintain a technical diary that covers the trainee’s experiences on engineering, technical, and managerial aspects.

Performance is monitored by the department industrial training coordinator, department academic staff, and the Industrial Training Division at Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa. . After completion, students need to submit a report and undergo final evaluation through an oral presentation and viva voce examination. This final assessment considers knowledge, skills, and attitudes improvement during the industrial training experience.
