In the year 2006, Department of Chemical and Process Engineering (DCPE), University of Moratuwa (UoM), Sri Lanka recognized the need to modernize its post graduate study programs to better serve the national need for technological development.
Staff members from UoM have therefore taken courses at Telemark University College, Norway (TUC), later named as University of Southern Norway (USN), to learn project-oriented education with modern laboratories, computer tools, and close interaction with the industry and businesses.
As a result, Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation’s (Norad) Program for Master Studies (NOMA) joined hand with DCPE, UoM in the years 2006-2010 with the funding provided by the Norwegian Center for International Corporation in Higher Education (SIU) for the development of master studies at DCPE, UoM, with emphasis on environmental and industrial projects. The project aimed at transferring such experience from TUC to UOM.
In consequence, simultaneous analysis of energy, environmental engineering and process technology aspects were the key areas considered in this MSc/Post-Graduate Degree Program that commenced on 1st December, 2007 with the Title of MSc/PG Diploma in Sustainable Process Development.
Late Prof. Rune Bakke from TUC was the Founder of this degree program.and Prof. P.G. Rathnasiri from UoM was the First Course Coordinator.
In the year 2019, the MSc/PG Diploma Course in Sustainable Process Development was converted into MSc/PG Diploma Course in Sustainable Process Engineering with a major curriculum revision by adopting the latest subject areas related to sustainable process industries and future trends in sustainable development.
A brief outline on the History of the MSc/PG Diploma Course in Sustainable Process Engineering is as follows.
