The Department of Electrical Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Lidula Widanagama Arachchige, a professor at Department of EE, and Dr. Thushara D. Rathnayaka, a senior lecturer in the department, as the new Directors of the Sustainable Energy Authority. In these prestigious roles, they will lead efforts to advance sustainable energy policies and initiatives, contributing to the global drive for cleaner, more efficient energy solutions.

Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Prof. KTMU Hemapala has been appointed as the new Secretary to the Ministry of Energy in Sri Lanka. Prior to his appointment, he served as the dean of the faculty of Engineering of University of Moratuwa. 

The Electrical Engineering Society of the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa held its Annual General Meeting 2024 on October 3rd at the Civil Engineering Auditorium. The event brought together a lively gathering of students from the 2020, 2021, and 2022 batches, alongside academic staff, making it a memorable evening of community and collaboration.

The Electrical Engineering Cricket Fiesta 2024 brought a day of energy, team spirit, and exciting moments to the University of Moratuwa grounds on September 26th, 2024. Organized by the Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc), the event featured spirited cricket matches between staff and students, along with competitions among different student batches. The fiesta was a fantastic display of camaraderie and teamwork, uniting the entire Electrical Engineering family for a memorable day on the field.

A successful Technical Knowledge Sharing Workshop was held on September 5, 2024, in collaboration with Rotax Limited for final-year Electrical Engineering students at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa. The session covered key topics such as Switchgear Applications, Automation Technologies, and Energy Management Systems, with students actively engaging in discussions and learning from industry experts.

Prof. Michael Pecht, a renowned expert in the field of electrical engineering and a professor at the University of Maryland, delivered the keynote address at the 10th edition of the Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference (MERCon 2024) on August 9. The conference, held at the University of Moratuwa, brought together leading academics, researchers, and industry professionals to discuss the latest advancements in engineering and technology.

Dr. Thushara Rathnayaka from the Department of Electrical Engineering participated in the Sixth Research Coordination Meeting on Economic Appraisal of Small Modular Reactors Projects: Methodologies and Applications, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under Coordinated Research Project (CRP) 112007 (2241). The meeting took place at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, from August 19 to 23, 2024.

The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Moratuwa is proud to announce that two of our esteemed faculty members have received Best Paper Awards at the 10th Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference (MERCon 2024), held from August 8th to 10th, 2024.

The Department of Electrical Engineering is proud to announce that the final year undergraduate project titled “Automated Volt-Var Control based on Predictive Analytics,” supervised by Dr. W.D. Prasad and Dr. C. Pathirawasam, has won 3rd place in the Annual Research Award for the Most Outstanding Undergraduate Energy Research 2024. This prestigious award was presented by the Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association (SLEMA).

The Department of Electrical Engineering is pleased to announce that Mr. J.M.B.P. Jayasundara (190267G) has been awarded a Merit Certificate at the Migara Ranatunga Trust Awards for Industrial Training for University Undergraduates for 2022/2023, presented by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL). Additionally, Mr. W.H.A.S. Lakshitha (190345U) and Mr. P.N. Madhushan (190371U) have been honored with Certificates of Participation. These achievements reflect the dedication and hard work of our students in their respective industrial training programs.
