Prof. WDAS Wijayapala has been appointed as the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering to succeed Prof. Udayanga Hemapala, with effect from 20^th October 2022.
Prof. Wijayapala graduated from University of Moratuwa in 1991 specializing in Electrical Engineering. He has over 25 years of experience in the electrical engineering industry in Sri Lanka. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka and an International Professional Engineer.

The department congratulates Prof. Udayanga Hemapala, former head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, who was elected as the Dean of Faculty of Engineering of University of Moratuwa, with effect from 20^th October 2022. 

Dr. Manuja Gunawardana currently affiliated as a lecturer on contract to the Department of Electrical Engineering has completed his Ph.D. with effect from 19th July 2022.

Dr. R M M Ruwanthika resumed duties in the post of Lecturer (Probationary) in the Department of Electrical Engineering with effect from 10th August 2022. The department would like to congratulate her for successful completion of PhD degree under the supervision of Prof. Seiichiro Katsura at the Department of System Design Engineering, Keio University, Japan. Her PhD research focused on excess force reduction in bilateral control for precise and safe operation. Dr R M M Ruwanthika received the B.Sc.

Dr. Asanka Rodrigo has been appointed as a Member of the Jury of the "Presidential Awards for Innovations" by the H.E. the President of Sri Lanka. The Presidential Awards for Innovations is organised by the Sri Lanka Inventors Commission (SLIC) and awarded to 14 technical fields.

Section Outstanding Branch Counselor or Advisor Award recognizes the outstanding contributions to IEEE as a Counselor or Advisor for a Student Branch in the Sectional, Regional, and Global level while upholding the vision of IEEE. Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which is a professional association for electrical and electronic engineering and associated disciplines is the world's largest technical professional organization. In addition to leading the UoM IEEE SB to be one of the flagship Student Branches in the region, Prof.

Dr. Lidula N.W. Arachchige has been promoted to the post of Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering (on merit) with effect from 17 July 2020. Prof. Lidula received the B.Sc. (Eng.) degree in Electrical Engineering as well as MSc in Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. She received the M.Eng. degree from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. Prof. Lidula received her PhD degree from the University of Manitoba, Canada.

The final report of “Safety and Technical Management Plan of Electricity Licensees” to ascertain the Safe Electrical Practices in the Electricity Sector was handed over to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka by Dr. Asanka Rodrigo. Representatives from CEB and LECO were also present at this event.

Dr. Asanka Rodrigo has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Studies for Research Degree at the Faculty of Graduate Studies with the effect of 01/06/2022 for a period of 03 years. Dr. Rodrigo is a former Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Engineering.

The technical paper titled “Low-Cost Ensembling for Deep Neural Network-Based Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM)” based on the work of the undergraduate project team, B. Gowrienanthan, K. D. I. S. Ratnayake, and N. Kiruthihan, jointly supervised by Dr. V. Logeeshan and Prof. Sisil Kumarawadu in the Department of Electrical Engineering has won the Best Paper Award in the category of Neural Networks at the IEEE World Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things Congress held in Seatle, USA, 6-9 June, 2022.
