Best Final Year Research Project Award 2024/2025

A final-year research project titled “Design and Development of a Distributed Voltage Compensator to Enhance the Solar PV Hosting Capacity of LV Distribution Feeders up to the Thermal Limit”, carried out by a final year group of Batch 2020 undergraduates from the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, under the supervision of Prof. J. P. Karunadasa, has been selected as the Best Final Year Research Project for the academic year 2024/2025.

Cricket Fiesta 2025 – Department of Electrical Engineering

On 2nd October 2025, the Department of Electrical Engineering organized the annual Cricket Fiesta, bringing together students and staff for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie.
The event, held at the University Grounds, featured teams from all four student batches alongside a staff team, all participating with tremendous energy and enthusiasm. After a series of exciting matches, the 2022 batch team emerged as the champions of the tournament.

Transforming the Power Sector with AI” Workshop – 11th October 2025

The IEEE Power & Energy Society Sri Lanka Chapter, in collaboration with EESoc and the IEEE PES UoM Student Chapter, successfully hosted the workshop “Transforming the Power Sector with AI” at the University of Moratuwa on 11th October 2025.
The program began with an insightful session by Dr. V. Logeeshan on the growing need for AI in power systems, followed by a hands-on workshop conducted by Eng. Vidura Bandara, focusing on practical AI applications.

Farewell Night: Celebrating the Journey of the 20 Batch

The 20 Batch of the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa came together with academic and non-academic staff for a memorable Farewell Party on November 7, 2025, at Rock House, Piliyandala. Beginning at 6.00 PM onwards, the evening created a lively and warm atmosphere as students and staff celebrated their journey together.

Prof. AGBP Jayasekara has been appointed as the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering

Prof. Buddhika Jayasekara has been appointed as the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, succeeding Prof. Anura Wijayapala, with effect from 20th October 2025.
Prof. Jayasekara graduated from the University of Moratuwa with a B.Sc. Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering and completed his M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the same university in 2004 and 2006, respectively. He pursued his Ph.D. in Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the University of Saga, Japan, in 2010.
