Best final year undergraduate project of 15 batch - Develop a Series-arc Fault Detector to minimize the risk of domestic electrical fires

The project titled “Develop a Series-arc Fault Detector to minimize the risk of domestic electrical fires” has been selected by the Department of Electrical Engineering as the best final year undergraduate project of 15 batch. The group members are Sachini Somathilaka, Nadun Senarathna, Hasinthaka Hewapathirana, Kaushalya Sumathipala, and the project is supervised by Prof. Udayanga Hemapala, Prof. Rohan Lucas and Dr. Narendra De Silva.

Promotion to the Post of Professor

Dr. DP Chandima has been promoted to the post of Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering (on merit) with effect from 04.07.2019. Prof. Chandima received the B.Sc. (Eng.) degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and the PhD degree from the University of Saga, Japan.

ADB Funded LECO-UOM Microgrid Project Launched in Partnership with DIMO and DHYBRID

Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) together with the University of Moratuwa (UOM) launched a pioneering pilot project on Microgrid with a grant assistance of $ 1.8 million  from Asian Development Bank (ADB).
DIMO, together with the German specialist DHYBRID, has been selected for the supply of comprehensive Renewable Energy Microgrid consisting of power generation and storage, a model which can be scaled up for uninterrupted power distribution for customers across the country.

EE Department Dark Room for lights testing and Acoustics Reverberation Chamber

The Electrical Engineering Department newly constructed dark room and reverberation chamber facility was opened by Professor, K.K.C.K Perera, former VC of University of Moratuwa on 29th July 2020. Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Professor N. K. Wickramarachchi, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Professor S. Kumarawadu, Professor A. Wijayapala, Dr. R. Wijesiriwardana and Dr. V. Logeeshan also attended the event. The lab was donated and constructed by Sanken PVT Ltd for the industrial contribution by Dr. R. Wijesiriwardana.

Team SiRi of University of Moratuwa becomes the champions at the 2nd Regional Association of Energy and Power Universities (RAEP) Energy and Electricity Market Business Decision Simulation Competition 2020

The team (Team SiRi) represented by the University of Moratuwa became the champions at the 2nd Regional Association of Energy and Power Universities (RAEP) Energy and Electricity Market Business Decision Simulation Competition 2020 organized by the Shanghai University of Electric Power (SUEP), Shanghai, China. The competition was held online this year. The completion had several rounds. Opening ceremony of the competition was held on 30th September 2020.

EE Undergraduate Students Received the Best Paper Award at the IESL Young Members’ Technical Conference 2020

The paper submitted by the final year project group “Smart Device for DC Side Fault Detection and Prediction for Solar PV Systems” of Electrical Engineering Department won the “Eng. Chandrasena Award” for the Best Paper at the IESL Young Member Technical Conference 2020. The project group comprises with P.W. Dewapura, M.M.S.D. Ranasingha, B.D.S. Premanath and K.M. Ramanayake and the group is supervised by Dr. Asanka Rodrigo.

EE Undergraduate Students Received ENG. E. W. Karunaratna Award – 2019/2020 for Best Undergraduate Project in Electrical Engineering

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) awards ‘ENG. E. W. Karunaratna Award’ for the best undergraduate project in Electrical Engineering across engineering faculties in Sri Lanka. This year, the project “Develop a Series Arc Fault Detector to Minimize the Risk of Domestic Electrical Fires”, done by a group of students in the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, received the award. The group members were, S. P. Somathilaka, N. T. Senarathna, H. E. Hewapathirana and W. M. K. S. Sumathipala. The project was supervised by Prof. J. R.
