An introductory session for the beginners, to get familiar with the transient simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC
The official welcome of the 2020 intake to the Department of Electrical Engineering was held on the 27th of May 2022 at the department seminar room. The event was graced by Prof. Udayanga Hemapala, Head-Department of Electrical Engineering, academic staff of the department, students of the 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 intakes, including executive committee members of the Electrical Engineering Society.
In a short period of time, the term “Energy crisis” has become one of the most common terms within Sri Lanka due to frequent power cuts. To give this term a technical value IEEE Power and Energy Society(PES) Student Branch Chapter of the University of Moratuwa had joined hands with the Electrical Engineering Society(EESoc) of the University of Moratuwa by organizing a panel discussion named “Energizing Sri Lanka”. The theme for the event was “Solving Sri Lanka’s present energy dilemma through scientific research and development”.
ADB President officially opened the LECO Microgrid Pilot Project and the LECO-UOM Smart Grid Research Lab at the University of Moratuwa on 11th March 2022.
Prof. Buddhika Jayasekra received the SUSRED Award 2019 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for supervising the PhD degree of Dr. Viraj Muthugala within normal duration of 4 years. Award ceremony was held along with the World Science Day programme on 16th November 2021 at the BMICH.
The team (STIMULUS) represented by the University of Moratuwa won a FIRST PRIZE at the 3rdRegional Association of Energy and Power Universities (RAEP) Energy and Electricity Market Business Decision Simulation Competition 2021 organized by the Shanghai University of Electric Power (SUEP), Shanghai, China and the Batangas State University, Philippines. The competition was held online this year. Opening ceremony of the competition was held on 7th September 2021.
Dr. Asanka Rodrigo conducted a two day training on Solar PV system designing, Installation and Testing for the engineers at the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), which was being held at Sustainable Energy Authority on 6th and 9th November 2021. The outcome of the training will empower the PUCSL’s effort on producing professional solar technicians island wide.
EECon 2021, the Third International Electrical Engineering Conference organized by the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Moratuwa was successfully held on 24th September on virtual mode. EECon 2021 was technically cosponsored by IEEE Sri Lanka Section, and Sri Lanka Chapters of IEEE Power and Energy Society, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, and IEEE Power Electronics Society.

The paper “Simulation and hardware implementation of automatic load balancer for distribution transformers” based on the final year undergraduate project conducted by Mr. Rajitha V Liyanage, Mr. Muditha Senevirathna and Mr. Akalanka Kanankege, supervised by Prof. Anura Wijayapala, Prof. JP Karunadasa and Eng. Arosha Fernando, emerged winners of the best paper contest of the 1st Sri Lankan Power Engineering Conference held virtually on 24th October 2021.
