Gayathri Madubhani Ranathunga presented the 11th inaugural lecture which was initiated by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Moratuwa on 20th October 2022 at 3.00 through zoom and Facebook live. Professor. Gayathri’s lecture on dress and fashion is driven by her perception of the subject that,' A new creation would not simply become a fashion unless it conforms to some underlying theories”. She shared her theoretical approaches discussing her most noteworthy four research papers.

Socio-cultural, political, economic, religious, and psychological factors influence fashion. Culture is one of the factors which influence. She pointed out that how culture is inseparably linked with dress where three parameters are significant in the local context.

She concluded her understanding of dress as a cultural object that “Cultural experience is transcendent and identical to each culture. A transcendental experience, event, object, or idea is learned through culture and practiced through tradition since time immemorial. That is indeed the real notion of the local context”.
