This program specifically designed to impart knowledge and skills required to manage the organizational activities related to the different stages in the textile and apparel value chain from fiber to consumer. The program provides broad range of advanced textile technology skills and management skills required to operate effectively inthe highly dynamic business environment of the textile and apparel sectors. The programme focuses on imparting knowledge and know-how on recent developments taking place on the frontiers of textile engineering and apparel manufacturing.

Therefore, modules covers the manufacturing aspects as well as management aspect associated with managing the textile and apparel value chain.

Post Graduate Diploma in Textile and Clothing Management

  1. The Postgraduate Diploma (SLQF-L8) requires a total of 40 credits. This includes 6 compulsory subject modules (3 × 6 credits = 18 credits) the Mini Project (4 credits) 6 elective subject modules (6 × 3 = 18 credits)
  2. The Postgraduate Diploma (SLQF-L8) will be conducted in two semesters.
  3. Normal Duration of PGDip (Tex&ClMgt) will be 12 months.

 

Master of Science in Textile and Clothing Management

 

  1. The MSc Degree (SLQF-L10) requires a total of 60 credits. This includes all compulsory subject modules (6 ×3 credits = 18 credits), the Mini Project (4 credits), 6 elective subject modules(6 ×3 = 18 credits),and the Research Project(20 credits).
  2. The MSc Degree (SLQF-L10) will be conducted in four semesters. All compulsory modules will be conducted during Semesters 1 and 2. The Mini Project will commence in Semester 2. Elective modules will be conducted during Semesters 1, 2, and 3. The Research Project will commence in Semester 3 and will continue till its completion.
  3. Minimum Duration of MSc (Tex&ClMgt) will be 21 months

Special notes:

All elective modules may not be offered.  The conduct of elective modules will depend on the availability of staff and students’ preferred choice of subject modules.

The allocation of subject modules within the different semesters would vary, depending on the availability of lecturers and the semester commencement date.

 

Mini Project

To earn the awards of PGDiploma or MSc you need to complete a mini project under the guidance of a supervisor. It is an individual project where you will be able to apply knowledge and skills gained in the course to a related mini project. You may independently develop a project from a given brief, demonstrating your ability to research, plan, and execute a project within a set timeframe.

 

Research project

 

Your research project is worth 33% of you MSc credits and your final grades. It is a major individual project, which will develop your research and analytical skills and enable you to specialize in an aspect of particular interest to you and is submitted in the form of dissertation at the end of the year.

 

This project can be related to manufacturing aspect or to management aspect of textile and apparel sector and can address problems related to different stages in the textile and apparel value chain.

 

How you will learn

 

Taught modules

A taught module typically consists of a combination of lectures, seminars, research, problem based learning and independent study. The majority of modules are taught in small classes to facilitate and encourage interaction. Others which are conducted in large classes are supported by small group or workshop activities. Module leaders are experts in their fields and are often supported by senior industry personnel who bring real world perspective into the classroom.

Each module in the course will include lectures and continuous assessment. The course is designed to be intensive and. Course will be conducted by university academics and senior industry personnel. Modules are delivered in the weekends to suit the busy work schedules of the industry personnel.

Modules are predominantly assessed by way of written assignments and examination but can also be in other formats. In addition to these there will be in class tests, presentations and a range of other assessment methods during each module.

Research project

Working on your research project will enable you will develop your personal research skills and will give you the opportunity to focus on a topic of particular interest to you, often aligned to your career goals and aspirations. For many students the project is a great “door opener” professionally so it’s important that you give it careful consideration and plan wisely. 

When selecting your project, you can connect with potential supervisors in order to select the most appropriate project for you.

You will be expected to engage regularly with your project supervisor and to provide progress updates and drafts of your work to an agreed schedule.

Your research project will be assessed by you supervisor and a panel of examiners appoint by the senate. As part of this assessment, you need to present your research project and answer questions at a viva session.

Courses of this nature at this level are by necessarily intensive and require a high level of commitment on the part of the student. Students are required to organize their time for their studies and to meet the project deadlines.

 

Entry requirements

 

 An honours degree of Bachelor of the Science of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa specializing in Textile/Clothing field

OR

 An honours degree of Bachelor of the Science of Engineering from a recognized University specializing in Textile/Clothing field, as may be approved by the Senate

OR

 The Degree of Bachelor of Design of Fashion Design and Product Development of the University of Moratuwa and a minimum of one year of recognized appropriate experience, as may be approved by the Senate

OR

 Any other engineering, science, technology or design degree of at least four years duration, from a recognized University, and a minimum of one year of recognized appropriate experience, as may be approved by the Senate

OR

 Any other engineering, science, technology or design degree of at least three years duration, from a recognized University, in a relevant field and a minimum of two years of recognized appropriate experience, as may be approved by the Senate

OR

 Any recognized category of membership of a recognized Professional Institute, obtained through an academic route, with a minimum of one year of recognized appropriate experience obtained after the membership, as may be approved by the Senate.
