Githmi Samarasekera proudly showcased her first fashion collection for the Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) 2022

Githmi Samarasekera proudly showcased her first fashion collection for the Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) 2022 that was held on 24th February at the Shangri-la Hotel, Colombo. She is a final year student of Fashion Design and Product Development Degree programme of the Department of Textile and Apparel Engineering. Githmi’s collection was inspired by the tea plantation culture during colonial Ceylon and draws influences from British, Indian, Sri Lankan styles to derive silhouettes, shapes and intricate details of the unique designs. Ceylon tea has been described as a pillar of Sri Lankan culture, heritage, and identity. Currently, the market of Ceylon tea has been declining and through the concept of "The bittersweet", this range focuses on regaining the attention to develop the pride around. "Being partially bitter or sorrowful and partially sweet or joyful", featuring the tea-dyed linen fabrics created by wastage of tea factories are the key feature of this formal-casual collection that was developed through creative pattern manipulation techniques, fabric draping, and fine tailoring methods. We, the Department of Textile and Apparel Engineering are proud of her and wishes success in her future endeavors.
