The Level 3 Quantity Surveying undergraduates of the Department of Building Economics participated in an educational site visit to key infrastructure development projects implemented under the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka. The visit was organised to provide students with practical exposure to large-scale construction and infrastructure projects, thereby strengthening their understanding of the Quantity Surveyor’s role in real project environments. On Day 1, the students visited the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Project (MWSIP), including the project locations at Palugaswewa and the Kaluganga Dam. The visit enabled students to observe the scale, complexity, and technical aspects involved in water security and dam-related infrastructure development. On Day 2, the students visited the Victoria Power Station, gaining further insights into hydropower-related infrastructure and its contribution to national development. These site visits offered students valuable first-hand knowledge of major infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka. They also helped students connect theoretical learning with practical industry applications, particularly in areas such as construction operations, project planning, and cost management. Overall, the experience was highly beneficial in broadening the students’ professional outlook and enhancing their appreciation of the Quantity Surveying profession within large-scale national development projects.
