The Department of Building Economics organised a series of guest lectures during May 2026 to strengthen the academic, technical, and professional development of Quantity Surveying undergraduates. The sessions enabled students to gain practical insights from experienced academics and industry professionals while connecting classroom knowledge with current construction industry practices. The first session for Level II Quantity Surveying undergraduates was held on 9 May 2026 under the topic “Introduction to MEP Works in Building Construction.” The lecture was conducted by Mr. Yasith Sandaruwan, a PhD Scholar attached to the Department of Building Economics. The session introduced students to the fundamental aspects of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing works in building projects. It also helped them understand the importance of building services and their relevance to measurement, cost planning, procurement, and overall quantity surveying practice. A second guest lecture for Level II undergraduates was conducted on 23 May 2026 on “The Business of Construction: How Quantity Surveyors Drive Profitability.” The session was delivered by Ch. QS Upul Shantha, Director of Cost Management Services (Pvt) Ltd. The lecture highlighted the commercial role of Quantity Surveyors in construction organisations and explained how effective cost management, financial decision-making, risk control, and commercial awareness contribute to project and organisational profitability. The Level IV Quantity Surveying undergraduates participated in a guest lecture titled “IT in QS Practice: Bridging the Knowledge - Application Gap” on 8 May 2026. The session was conducted by Ch. QS Lalith Rathnayake and Ch. QS Chandana Geeganage, Directors of VFORM Consultants. The speakers discussed the increasing importance of information technology in contemporary quantity surveying practice and highlighted the need to bridge the gap between technological knowledge and its practical application in professional environments. Another guest lecture for Level IV undergraduates was held on 22 May 2026 on “Communication and Professional Skills for a Quantity Surveyor.” The session was delivered by Mr. Dilhan Jayamanna, Senior Commercial Manager at Network Rail, Welwyn Garden City, England, United Kingdom. Drawing on his professional experience, the speaker emphasised the importance of communication, teamwork, adaptability, leadership, and professionalism in developing a successful career as a Quantity Surveyor in both local and international contexts. These guest lectures complemented the students’ academic learning by exposing them to practical knowledge, professional experiences, and current industry expectations.
