Former Head of the Department
[2015 - 2020]

Prof. Yasangika Sandanayake was the former Head of the Department of Building Economics at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka from 2015 to 2020. She was also the former Director of Postgraduate Studies Division of Faculty of Architecture since 2013 to 2016.

She obtained her BSc in Quantity Surveying from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 2001 and PhD from the University of Wolverhampton, UK in 2009. 

In 2001, she joined the Department of Building Economics at the University of Moratuwa as a temporary lecturer and in 2002, she was absorbed into the permanent cadre as a full-time lecturer at the department. Prof. Sandanayake was promoted to Senior Lecturer Grade II, Grade I and Professorship in 2009, 2015 and 2018, respectively. She was invited to take over the position of Head of Department of Building Economics in year 2015. Prof. Sandanayake was successful in enhancing the quality of programmes, recruiting highly qualified academics & non-academic staff members, and increasing facilities for both staff and students of the Department of Building Economics to an exceptional standard under her headship. During her tenure as the Head, the Department laid the foundation for the second building in 2020 and the B.Sc. in Facilities Management programme received IFMA Accreditation in 2019. Through a well-developed Building Economics and Management Research Unit (BEMRU) strategic plan, she was able to increase the staff research publications by 200% in terms of both quantity and quality during her tenure.

Prof. Sandanayake is the Scientific Committee Chair of the annual World Construction Symposium since 2012 and is the Joint Editor of Built Environment Project and Asset Management Journal (BEPAM), published by an Emerald, UK. In addition, she is a member of Global Leadership Forum for Construction Engineering and Management Programs (GLF-CEM) and has been a resource personnel and invited speaker for many leading conferences and workshops. Her research interests include Value Management, Performance Management, Lean Construction, Construction Supply Chain Management and Facilities Management. She has published over 100 journal and conference papers in the field of the built environment and has supervised a number of Doctoral and MPhil theses. Prof. Sandanayake has received many national and international awards including several EMERALD Research Awards, FARU 2017 Award and University of Moratuwa Research Excellence Award.
