Enhancing Professional Readiness: Guest Lectures for Quantity Surveying Undergraduates

The Department of Building Economics organized two guest lectures for Level 3 and Level 4 Quantity Surveying undergraduates, providing valuable industry insights that complement their academic learning and professional development. The guest lecture for Level 4 Quantity Surveying undergraduates was held on 27 January 2026 under the theme “Employability Skills: What Makes a Fresh Graduate Job-Ready.” The session was delivered by Mr. Geesara Wijethilaka, Senior Cost Manager at 3G Consultants (Pvt.) Ltd. The lecture focused on preparing final-year undergraduates for the transition from university to the professional workplace. During the session, Mr. Wijethilaka highlighted the key competencies that employers seek in graduates entering the construction industry. In addition to strong technical knowledge, he emphasized the importance of communication skills, teamwork, professional attitude, adaptability, and continuous learning. The lecture encouraged students to develop a proactive mindset and build the practical skills required to perform effectively as industry professionals. The second guest lecture was organized for Level 3 Quantity Surveying undergraduates on 6 February 2026 on the topic “Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Process for Construction Projects.” The session was conducted by Ch.QS. Upul Shantha, Director of Cost Management Services (Pvt) Ltd. This lecture was delivered as part of the Sustainable Development module offered to Level 3 students. The session provided students with a comprehensive overview of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process and its significance in construction projects. The speaker explained how EIAs are used to identify, evaluate, and mitigate potential environmental impacts associated with development activities. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of EIAs in large-scale construction projects where environmental risks and potential negative impacts are more significant. Both lectures offered students valuable opportunities to gain practical knowledge from experienced industry professionals. By integrating industry perspectives into academic learning, the Department continues to strengthen the professional readiness of its undergraduates while promoting awareness of responsible and sustainable construction practices.
