Workshop on Introduction to AI Applications for Process Engineering and Sustainable Industries

AI Workshop at UoM

As part of the MSc/PG Diploma in Sustainable Process Engineering program, the 2025 intake of students participated in a workshop on “Introduction to AI Applications for Process Engineering and Sustainable Industries” held on 3rd August 2025. The session was conducted by Dr. Bandara Dissanayake, who provided an in-depth exploration of how artificial intelligence can be applied to enhance sustainability in process industries.

The workshop aimed to equip professionals working in process industries with foundational AI/ML knowledge tailored to Chemical and Process Engineering (CPE), demonstrate practical applications of AI in CPE, and encourage critical thinking about AI’s impact on industry and beyond.

The workshop gave students a hands-on look at how AI is used in real industrial processes to boost efficiency, make better use of resources, and support environmental goals. Through group activities, students worked together to come up with practical AI ideas that apply directly to their own fields, helping them see how AI can make a real difference.

This workshop directly aligned with the program’s objective of equipping professionals with modern tools and knowledge to address challenges in sustainable process engineering. The Department gratefully acknowledged Dr. Bandara Dissanayake for sharing his expertise and commended the students for their enthusiastic participation, which contributed to the overall success of the event.
