Prof. Thushara Subasinghe of the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa (UOM), delivered a session titled “Basics of Upstream Petroleum Processing” at the One-day workshop on Marine and Offshore Engineering, held for third and final year Engineering undergraduates at the University off Moratuwa.
The Workshop, part of a broader event on the Marine and Offshore industry: technology, opportunities and ESG Stewardship, was jointly organized by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) through its Marine & Offshore Services (M&OS) Sub-committee on Skills Development, the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), and the University of Moratuwa.
In his session, Prof. Subasinghe introduced undergraduates to the fundamentals of upstream petroleum processing, laying out core concepts and processes that underpin the exploration and production side of the petroleum industry. The lecture aimed to give engineering undergraduate students a working foundation in upstream processing principles, relevant to graduates who may go on to careers in offshore energy, petroleum, and related process industries.
The session was well received by the undergraduate audience, who are set to enter final-year study and, subsequently, the engineering workforce, with many expected to find opportunities in Sri Lanka’s expanding Marine & Offshore Services sector.
Prof. Subasinghe’s participation reflects the University of Moratuwa’s continued role in equipping engineering undergraduates with specialized industry-relevant knowledge, in step with national efforts led by the EDB and IESL to build skilled human capital for the marine and offshore industry.
