One day workshop titled “Microalgae: Sustainable Cellular Factories”, conducted by the Departments of Chemical and Process Engineering and Mechanical Engineering of University of Moratuwa, was held on the 13th of November 2018. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India and was funded by Ministry of Science, Technology and Research under the Indo-Lanka Joint Research Programme for the year 2016.
The inauguration ceremony of the workshop was held at the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering and was graced by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Dean-Faculty of Engineering, Director/International Relations and the Heads of the Departments of Chemical and Process Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Prof. R.A Attalage, Prof. S.N. Naik and Dr. Megha Mathur. 16 participants selected from many applicants who represented higher education institutes all over the country participated in the workshop.
The key note speakers of the program were Prof. S.N. Naik and Dr. Megha Mathur of Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India. Through the lectures and interactive lab sessions, the participants gained valuable knowledge on the isolation, cultivation and harvesting processes of microalgae. Furthermore, extraction of high-value products from microalgae was also discussed through lectures and lab activities.
