Dr. Mahinsasa Rathnayake, senior lecturer at the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa, participated in the live streaming programme ‘Big Focus’ conducted by Ada Derana TV channel. The theme of the programme was waste management and alternative energy sources.
He first elaborated on the importance of the role of chemical and process engineers, in the manufacturing industry and explain the reasons for the tendency of leaving the country for better opportunities by graduates and scholars. He suggested that significant changes should be done to the education system of Sri Lanka to change this pattern. Further expressing his thoughts on how waste can be changed into value-added products with the right mindset, Dr. Mahinsasa shared his knowledge of how materials such as rice straw and fish waste can be used to produce alternative fuels and to manufacture products that can be exported.
