Students of the 21 batch of Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa visited the factory premises of Cargills Quality Dairies, Banduragoda on 26th of June 2023. A warm welcome was offered by the staff of the factory followed by an introductory session on the history and operations.
This was followed by a workshop from the engineering department of the factory familiarizing the students with the functioning of the key systems in the factory such as manufacturing, utilities, CIP process, and wastewater treatment. An in-depth discussion that parted invaluable grounded engineering practices took place. Then the students visited the factory premises to further their understanding about the pipeline network, production facilities, storage facilities, pumping and compressed air systems, and wastewater treatment facilities of the Cargills Quality Diaries.
This field visit was focused on gaining knowledge and experience for the students on how a pipeline network of a food manufacturing plant is designed, operated, and maintained with regards to an assignment on fluid dynamics. The outcome of the visit exceeded the expectations of the students as well as the academic staff as both important practical and conceptual knowledge on engineering practices were passed through by the well experienced staff of the factory.
