HIGH VOLTAGE LABORATORY

high voltage

Introduction

High Voltage Laboratory was established in the year 2017 with the patronization of LTL Holdings (Pvt) Ltd as its industrial sponsor in the construction. This laboratory has been named after the Emeritus Professor Rohan Lucas in recognition of his long and dedicated service of over 45 years, towards High Voltage Engineering education at the university. The laboratory is perceived as the only test facility in Sri Lanka including an impulse generator test set, HVAC and HVDC test sets, artificial rain making equipment, auxiliary devices and associated control equipment that are capable of conducting most of the testing required by the power industry in the country. The laboratory is capable of HV impulse tests, HVAC and DC tests up to 500kV, 300kV and 400kV respectively, under different environmental conditions. The High Voltage Laboratory is of immense support to the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Engineering students for their laboratory experiments, design and research projects conducted by the department. Furthermore, the testing facility is capable of carrying out different high voltage related tests including, transformer testing, HV cable testing, meter testing, HV insulator and bushing testing, HV switchgear testing, HV CT/PT/ and CVT testing, which are frequently required by the power industry in the country.
