Mathlete 2022 was the biggest event organized by the Mathematics Society of the University of Moratuwa. It was a program that included workshops held by distinguished lecturers, mock tests, and many fun activities that gave a sense of bonding and enlightenment to our participants. The 2022 edition of the event was only the 2nd time it was organized and the first time it was held in a physical nature. Mathlete 2022 took place on the 6th and 7th of August 2022 at the university premises and saw over 40 math enthusiasts taking part in this 2-day program including several members from the Epsilon-Delta Society from the University of Colombo.
On the first day, registered participants were divided into teams at the front desk and would later take part in an assortment of activities together. Proceedings officially began with the Welcome Speech by the Chairman of the “Mathlete” Organizing Committee, Mast. Nadun Atugoda followed by the Society’s President, Mast. Yohan Abeysinghe, introducing the Mora Maths Society and its projects to the participants. After these two inspiring speeches, the first workshop was underway in quick succession. The workshop was on “Introduction to ASP” and was conducted by Dr. Nadeeka De Silva, a senior lecturer from the Mathematics Department of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura. Post the workshop, Miss Kavindya Dilhara, the secretary of the society briefed the participants on the exciting activities planned out for them. This was followed by lunch and then later an interesting team puzzle activity held at the Lagaan. Participants were starting to make new friends during this session and made many more when the first round of the debating competition was held afterward at the ENTC hall. The first day’s activities were concluded with tea and a fun-filled sing-along session.
The Second day of proceedings started with the 2nd workshop, held in the Mathematics Department. It was conducted by Mr. Rohana Dissanayake, head of the Mathematics Department of the University of Moratuwa, and was focused on the aspects of “Brownian Motion”. Then, the math enthusiasts were given a mock test at the same hall where they were able to test themselves with some very interesting IMC-level problems. After the heavy morning agenda, the participants had lunch followed by various games and the final round of the debating competition at the ENTC hall. At the end of this informal session, the closing ceremony began as it drew the curtains down on a memorable event. It began with a speech delivered by the Senior Treasurer of the Mathematics Society, Ms. Bimali Jayasinghe, followed by the presentation of certificates of participation to the attendees. Mast. Navindu De Silva, the secretary of the “Mathlete 2022” Organizing Committee then delivered the Vote of Thanks, thereby adjourning the successful completion of Mathlete 2022.
