Online Training Programme on Design of Lightning and Surge Protection System

Course Objectives

  • To be able to describe the various aspects of lightning phenomena, including direct strikes, backflash overvoltages, ground flash density, and isokeraunic maps and explain the principles behind the occurrence and characteristics of lightning events.
  • To gain knowledge about international lightning protection standards such as IEC, BS, and IEEE that govern lightning protection measures and understand the importance of adhering to these standards in designing and implementing effective lightning protection systems.
  • To design the essential components of lightning protection systems, including air-termination systems, down conductor systems, and earthing systems and explore advanced concepts such as the use of reinforcement steel and foundation earth for lightning protection and the protection of special locations.
  • To evaluate various surge protection devices, including spark gaps, Metal-Oxide Varistors (MOVs), and Surge Arresting Devices (SADs).
  • Understand the advantages and drawbacks of each type of surge protection device and make informed decisions on their selection and installation.
