Section Outstanding Branch Counselor or Advisor Award recognizes the outstanding contributions to IEEE as a Counselor or Advisor for a Student Branch in the Sectional, Regional, and Global level while upholding the vision of IEEE. Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which is a professional association for electrical and electronic engineering and associated disciplines is the world's largest technical professional organization. In addition to leading the UoM IEEE SB to be one of the flagship Student Branches in the region, Prof. Kumarawadu took the important initiative of forming multiple of Student Branches in the country while serving in the capacity of the Chairman of IEEE SL Section in 2008.
