Dr. Thushara D. Rathnayaka, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, and Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, participated in the Second South, Central, and East Asia FIRST Pan-Regional Conference on Advancing the Safe and Secure Deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) held from 29–31 October 2025 in Singapore.
The conference was co-hosted by the U.S. Department of State, the Republic of Korea, and Singapore, and brought together regional and international experts to deliberate on key aspects of SMR development. Discussions focused on nuclear safety and security, regulatory frameworks, siting considerations, spent fuel management, and non-proliferation measures.
As part of the conference programme, Dr. Rathnayaka also took part in a technical visit to the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute (SNRSI), where participants gained insights into advanced nuclear research activities, safety practices, and institutional capabilities supporting the responsible development of nuclear technologies.
Dr. Rathnayaka’s participation highlights Sri Lanka’s active engagement in regional dialogue on advanced nuclear energy technologies and reaffirms the country’s commitment to the safe, secure, and responsible development of nuclear energy.
