Annual International urban design conference on Cities, People & Places (ICCPP)


The annual International urban design conference on Cities, People & Places (ICCPP) was held from October 30th to November 1st, 2016 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo. The inauguration of the fourth International Urban Design Conference on “Cities, People and Places” ICCPP2016 was taken placed on the 30th of October 2016 at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo. Hon. Minister of Media and Chief Government Whip, Gayantha Karunathilaka addressed the audience of the ICCPP2016 Conference inauguration ceremony on behalf of Hon. Speaker of the Parliament, Deshabandu KaruJayasuriya. He stressed the importance of implementing proper planning to ensure effective city management. Prof. Ananda Jayawardane, the Vice Chancellor of Moratuwa University, Prof. Lalith De Silva, the dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Dr. Gamini Weerasinghe delivered speeches. The ICCPP Conference Chair, Dr. Janaka Wijesundara delivered the welcome speech. The invited local and foreign key note speakers were Prof. Murray Fraser, the Prof. of Architecture and Global Culture in Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL in UK, Prof. J.B. Dissanayake, Emeritus Professor in Sinhala at University of Colombo and Archt. Channa Daswatte. They stressed on various factors of small and large-scale cities and their developments

The second day of the conference was graced by Mr. Joern Rhode, German Ambassador to Sri Lanka who attended as the chief guest of the event. The keynote Speakers of the first session was Prof. Murray Fraser and Prof. Miki Desai, retired Professor of Architecture CEPT University. Mr. Joern Rhode clarified the need for Smart Cities and drew attention to the proper implementation of Colombo Mega polis and city development. Prof. Miki Desai spoke of how vernacular spaces support place making. He also remarked how place-making a reflection of us and our surrounding environment is.

International Students Urban Design Workshop – UDW-2016 

Urban Design Workshop is organised annually as a parallel activity of the ICCPP conference by the Department of Architecture in collaboration with KUL in Belgium. This two day International Urban Design Workshop – UDW2016 was held from Oct 27th- 29th, 2016 at Moratuwa University involving local and foreign architects and students. Altogether 91 students participated the workshop and 14 foreign students from Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Germany and Cambodia and 77 students from Moratuwa and Colombo universities. This workshop was organized for the 4th time consecutively and facilitated by Prof. Koen De Wandalar of KU Leuven, Belgium.

Completion of Mannar City Urban Design Guidelines

The Urban Design Master Plan for Mannar City Centre was prepared by the Urban Design Program with the asistance of the students and staff. The study was conducted with Urban Design research students with the supervision of the staff and this provides a vision for replenishing of discontinued tradition and urbanity of Mannar Town in Sri Lanka. Mannar Town is one of the least developed towns in Northern Sri Lanka which was isolated during the conflicts periods of 30 years.The detailed guidelines for development were prepared of 5 selected districts.This plan was presented and handed over the final document to the Mannar City Council in June 2014. I will try to find a photo of this event.   


Pre-conference Urban Design Workshop:

This workshop was held on October 30th, 2014 from 9am to 5pm at the Department of Architecture for the students of architecture and planning. The workshop was conducted by Prof. Koen Wandeler from the University of Lueven in Belgium and a special lecture was conducted by Prof. Rich Rise from Texas University of USA. Several foreign academics and foreign students from the Universities from USA, Thailand, Cambodia, and India were participated the workshop.

Special Guest Lecture on Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and Urban Design: Exploring the Linkages for Sustainable Transport

This lecture was delivered by Prof. Surya Raj Acharya, PhD, General Secretary, Society of Transport Engineers in Nepal, Visiting Faculty.
Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu in Nepal on Saturday, Nov 22nd, 2014 from 11.30am-2.00pm at the Department of Architecture.His lecture is about capturing a big picture of transport problems in Asian cities. It will discuss on how TOD is the key instrument to address urban transport problem, and finally put forwards arguments about the role of Urban Design in operationalizing the concept of TOD (with selected examples, such as DLR in London, and value capture concept in Japan).

Field tour to Jaffna in Sri Lanka - 2011

The MUD students and some staff members visited Jaffna city, the capital of Northern Province in Sri Lanka in March 2010. The group spent two days in the city and carried out an urban design study in the downtown of Jaffna.

Field tour to Batticaloa in Sri Lanka - 2011

The 2nd batch of MUD students and some staff members visited Batticaloa in 2011, a prominent city in the eastern shores of the island as part of their ongoing Design Project. The group spent two days in the city and carried out an urban design study and photographic survey.
