Overview

The Department of Management of Technology (MOT) is the pioneering department in the Faculty of Business. It was established as a service department in 1998 under the purview of the Faculty of Engineering to deliver management modules for engineering undergraduates. The Department of MoT offered a number of modules related to Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Technology Management and Entrepreneurship. In 2002, the department introduced their own two Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree programs: (1) MBA in Management of Technology and (2) MBA in Entrepreneurship. The objectives of the two programmes were to nurture managers capable of responding intelligently to technological change and to nurture entrepreneurs who can identify opportunities for new value creation, thereby contributing to the country's economic growth. By adhering to the contemporary requirements of society, we have also introduced an MBA in Techno-Entrepreneurship.

The Department of MoT transitioned to become an integral part of the Faculty of Business in 2017. At present, it offers the Business Process Management (BPM) specialization as part of the Bachelor of Business Science (BBSc.) Honours degree programme. The BPM specialization equips students with competencies encompassing knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for effectively managing business processes in diverse industries, including the manufacturing and services sectors around the globe.

The unique curriculum we offer is one of the core competencies of the Department of MoT. This is unparalleled in the South Asian region, offering a specialized degree in BPM. The curriculum primarily covers modules related to IT in BPM and Business Process Excellence that open up numerous employment opportunities for the graduates at the end of the programme. We offer modules in business process visualization, modeling, analysis, and simulation, along with business process excellence methodologies such as lean management, six sigma, and total productive maintenance. The curriculum also integrates management aspects like human resources, marketing, operations, supply chain, quality, etc., all viewed through a process perspective. Notably, students gain hands-on experience with BPM software applications, robotic process automation, process mining, and enterprise resource planning (ERP), with an option for a minor degree in ERP systems. Collaborations with industry service providers allow students to earn certificates for professional courses by simply completing the relevant modules at the university. Further details about the curriculum can be found at https://uom.lk/mot/undergraduate-programme.

One of the other notable features of this programme is the exposure to industry that we provide through modules starting from the very first and second years, which includes factory visits, workshops, and guest lectures. From the second year onwards, students can engage in volunteer industrial projects, and during the final year, they undertake applied research projects addressing real-world industrial problems. This comprehensive approach ensures that students gain practical knowledge and experience in BPM. In addition, the program focuses on skills and attitudes development from the outset. Students work in teams on practical assignments, fostering teamwork skills, and they participate regularly in presentations and classroom discussions, thus honing their communication skills as well. Active involvement in sports and clubs, along with exposure to industrial practices, contributes to the development of positive attitudes, emphasizing equality, fairness, objective evaluations, constructive feedback, and recognition.
