1. Programmes - (Type A - Taught Programmes)
1.1 The performance of a candidate shall be assessed on the basis of the following:
a) Written examination(s);
b) Assignments;
c) Examination of the Dissertation or Design Project Report including a Viva-voce examination.
1.2 If the performance of a student is below the pass mark in any of the parts in Section 1.1 the student may be re-examined in that part after a period of time specified by the Head of the Department.
1.3. Eligibility and Performance Criteria
The "Eligibility and Performance Criteria" of the programme shall be formulated under this By-Law, recommended by the Faculty and approved by the Senate and set out as one or more separate document/s.
2. Programmes - (Type B - Major Component of Research)
2.1. The performance of the candidate for the award of the Master of Science (Type B) degree shall be assessed on the basis of the following, provided he has satisfied the pre-requisites detailed out in clause 2.1.1:
(a) Examination of the Thesis, and the
(b) Viva-voce Examination
2.1.1. The candidate shall have satisfied the following additional components as detailed out in the performance criteria:
(a) Has pursued an approved programme
(b) Has fulfilled all academic requirements of the programme
(c) Has successfully completed all prescribed evaluations
(d) Has successfully met the stipulated publication requirements
(e) Has fulfilled both minimum and maximum duration requirements
(f) Has paid all fees
2.2 Performance Criteria
The performance criteria of the programme shall be the relevant Regulation 49.1, framed under this By-Law.
2.3. Examinations
Notwithstanding the criteria set out under clause 2.2, the examinations shall satisfy the following:
2.3.1 The thesis shall be examined (including a Viva-voce) by a Panel, approved by the Council on the recommendation of the Home Faculty, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Senate. The composition and the appointment of the panel shall be as laid out by the Senate.
2.3.2 In the event that the candidate is an officer or teacher of the University of Moratuwa, an officer or a teacher of the University of Moratuwa shall not be appointed as an Examiner of the Thesis.
2.3.3 The original contribution to knowledge of the research work; the competence of the candidate in carrying out the work independently; his understanding of the appropriate techniques; and his ability to make critical use of the published work and source materials shall be evaluated by the panel.
2.4 The other components as specified in Clause 2.1.1 shall be evaluated by examiners approved by the Senate on the recommendation of the relevant Faculty.
3. Re-examination
Notwithstanding the criteria set out under clause 2.2, the examinations shall satisfy the following:
3.1 If the performance of a student is below pass grade in any part mentioned in Clause 1.1, the student may be re-examined in the part(s) after a period of time specified by the Senate; on the recommendation of the panel of examiners.
3.2 Normally only one re-examination shall be allowed for each individual part.
3.3 If the thesis, though unsatisfactory, shall seem to be of sufficient merit to justify such action, the examiners may recommend that the candidate be permitted to re-present his thesis in revised form on one occasion within a period specified by the Senate. No further resubmissions will be allowed, and the examiners may recommend either to grant an MSc degree (Type B) or not to grant any degree to the candidate.
