M.Sc. in Occupational Safety and Health Management Programme is structured to offer specialized areas of current importance in the industry. It has a lecture panel of highly qualified, experienced and motivated professionals engaged in various professions such as Occupational Safety and Health, Facilities Management, Engineering, Architecture, Law, Quantity Surveying and Human Resource Management.

The overall program goal is to provide the highest quality of academically well trained competent safety practitioners for businesses and industries as well as the government institutions in Sri Lanka and globally. The program objectives include training graduates with hands-on working knowledge and general understanding of all aspects in management of occupational safety and health. On 14th July 2023, we came together at the Department of Facilities Management, University of Moratuwa, to commemorate World Facilities Management Day 2023 under the theme 'Making a Real Difference.' 

The event was a fantastic opportunity for our esteemed academics, talented FM graduates, and budding FM undergraduates to connect and exchange ideas. Our graduates generously supported their juniors, guiding them in their career paths and facilitating valuable networking opportunities.

Together, we strive to create spaces that are safe, sustainable, and conducive to growth, making a real difference in the lives of people and organizations.

Awareness programme and visit to Machinery Testing and Trial Unit (MTTU) Welisara

The academic staff from the Department of Facilities Management at the University of Moratuwa visited Machinery Testing and Trial Unit (MTTU), Welisara for an awareness programme, generously hosted by the MTTU of Naval Base Welisara on August 16, 2023. This transformative experience equipped our educators with cutting-edge maintenance techniques, including infrared thermography, ultrasound analysis, vibration analysis, and oil analysis. Armed with this knowledge, our esteemed lecturers are well-prepared to inspire and educate our students, ensuring that the next generation of facility managers are equipped with the skills needed for efficient maintenance practices. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the MTTU for their invaluable guidance and support.

WHAT IS FACILITIES MANAGEMENT (FM)

Facilities management is the coordination and management of the physical and technical functions of a building or organization. This can include tasks such as maintenance and repair, cleaning, security, and energy management. The goal of facilities management is to ensure that the organization's physical environment is safe, efficient, and comfortable for employees and visitors.

A facility manager is the professional responsible for the overall management and coordination of these functions. They are responsible for ensuring that the organization's facilities are running smoothly and efficiently and that any issues are promptly addressed. This includes managing budgets, coordinating with outside vendors, and overseeing the work of other facilities management staff. Facility managers also play a key role in ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations. They may work in a variety of different settings, such as office buildings, hospitals, schools, and industrial facilities.

Overall, facilities management is a critical component of any organization, and facility managers play a vital role in ensuring that the organization's physical environment supports the organization's mission and goals.

Institute of Facilities Management Sri Lanka

The Institute of Facilities Management Sri Lanka (IFMSL) is the sole professional body for facilities management (FM). 

The main objectives of the institute are to secure the advancement and facilitate the acquisition of knowledge which constitutes the profession of a Facility Manager, to promote and develop knowledge, skills, competencies, and best practices of Facilities Management, to promote professional qualifications, and establish and regulate nationally recognized qualifications as an examining body and to co-operate with, and coordinate actions with organizations and persons whose functions and actions related to Facilities Management profession.

IFMSL campaign for brilliance in Facilities Management for the benefit of both the practitioners and the society. IFMSL ensures a high level of professional competence among the membership and those aspiring to be members. This Institute also aims at providing good governance, controlling and maintaining standards of practice while guiding the members in their continuous professional development with a view to develop and promote the Facilities Management profession.
