Hostel Internet Policy

1. General

  1. Students are not provided with additional equipment to access the internet.
  2. Students are prohibited from creating, viewing, accessing, attempting to access, storing, downloading or displaying inappropriate material electronically.
  3. All peer-to-peer usage is prohibited.
  4. Students may use their own wifi APs. However, CITeS is not responsible for the configuration or any damages.
  5. You will be forcibly logged out after 24 Hours. You have to log in again to access the internet.

2. Blocking Access to Certain Websites

  1. The University of Moratuwa will restrict access to specific categories of websites and will manage this by classifying websites into three categories:
    • Sites that are available at all times this is all sites except below.
    • Sites are blocked during regular academic hours, defined as between 8:00 am to 5.00 pm, all seven days of the week. These are categories of sites that are very unlikely to have legitimate work usage and include:
      • Torrents sites
      • Dating sites
      • Gambling sites
      • Game sites
    • Sites that contain pornographic and objectionable material will be blocked entirely as far as is practicable.
  2. The ICT strategy committee will determine the sites to be blocked upon a recommendation from the Director of the Center for IT-enabled Services(CITeS).
  3. Any Student with a legitimate need to access sites under the categories above may apply via UoM HelpDesk.

3. Monitoring and Enforcement

  1. CITeS is responsible for monitoring Internet usage and the management of the network in accordance with this policy. This includes:
    • Tracking usage and identifying any concerns.
    • Revoking Internet access to students who violate the policy.
  2. CITeS will advise the relevant Head of Department of any suspected breaches of this policy. Any concerns will be investigated in accordance with the procedures outlined in the IT Policy | University of Moratuwa. Breaches of this policy may be viewed as serious misconduct which could result in disciplinary action being taken.
