The Canadian Government has launched ‘The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship Program’ to attract 1,500 scholarship recipients to the Universities in Canada over a period of five years and develop academic programmes between the governments of Canada and Sri Lanka. Under this initiative, the University of Moratuwa signed an agreement with the University of Calgary Canada at the Canada House, the residence of the Canadian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka on 12th August 2015.
The objective of the scholarship programme is to engage a dynamic community of young global leaders across Commonwealth countries to create a lasting impact, both at home and abroad through international learning experiences and cross-cultural exchanges. This scholarship programme is also to share knowledge and inculcate interest among young scholars to achieve young global leader status for development of countries such as Sri Lanka.
According to Professor Ananda Jayawardane, who was a signatory to this Agreement, the scholarship scheme launched for graduate studies and development for research, would all come together through such collaborations. In addition, enhancing international outlook of the UOM would further cement student exchange, which is part of this scheme put together by the Canadian government. Already Mr. Asiri Senasinghe a graduate from the UOM has commenced his Post Graduate studies at the Calgary University under this scholarship programme.
Representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education, the University Grants Commission and distinguished Canadian alumni in Sri Lanka attended the signing ceremony.
