Vice-Chancellor, University of Moratuwa
Prof. K.T.M. Udayanga Hemapala assumed duties as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa on 3rd September 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the leadership of the University.
Prof. Hemapala is a distinguished academic, engineer, researcher and administrator with extensive experience in higher education and the energy sector. A Senior Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, he previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from October 2022 to September 2024 and as Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering from January 2021 to October 2022. He also served as the Secretary to the Ministry of Energy from September 2024 to April 2026.
An alumnus of the University of Moratuwa, Prof. Hemapala graduated with a BSc. Engineering (Honours) degree with First Class in 2004 and obtained his PhD from the University of Genova, Italy, in 2009. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) and a Senior Member of the IEEE.
Throughout his academic career, Prof. Hemapala has made significant contributions to research and innovation, particularly in the areas of smart grids, power system control, renewable energy, robotics and automation. His work has also fostered strong links between academia, industry and the energy sector through numerous research, consultancy and collaborative initiatives.
With his extensive experience spanning academia, research, university administration and national-level public service, his appointment brings a broad perspective to the leadership of the University at an important stage of its continuing development.
