Prof. Ananda Jayawardane completes his second term as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa today, 27th November 2017. Prof. Jayawardane has made enormous strides in gearing the university towards its vision of making UoM an outstanding, globally recognised knowledge enterprise in Asia producing world class graduates and generating new knowledge in an environment that provides a rewarding experience for its students and staff. To that end, he laid special emphasis on quality assurance, international accreditation, improving research culture and enhancing innovation, thereby improving graduates’ responsiveness to industry needs.
Promotion of entrepreneurship, significant improvement of infrastructure, and the enhancement of the international image of UoM are highlights of his stint as the vice chancellor. Since assuming duties in 2008, he masterminded the design of the university’s strategic management plan, and led its successful execution in his capacity of chief executive officer and chief accounting officer of the university.
Under his leadership UoM won the highest number of Google Summer of Code (GSoC) awards ever won by a single university during the period 2007-2014. Furthermore three awards were won by UoM at IMechE Student Formula Car competition in London in 2016 which was the first time UoM participated at this competition. The university’s Rotaract Club was the winner of Outstanding Project Award for “Gramaprobodhaya” which is a community service project initiated by Rotaract club of UoM, making UoM the first Sri Lankan Rotaract Club to win such a prestigious award.
University of Moratuwa owes many of its greatest achievements to Prof. Jayawardane’s exemplary leadership and guidance, and thanks him for his outstanding service as a university leader for over 20 years.
