University of Moratuwa is considered the best technological university in Sri Lanka and is a highly sought after state university for higher education. The university’s overall employment ratio for all courses at the time of the convocation in 2018 was 92.6%. This figure is comparable with that of the best universities in the world. Over the years, the university has established itself as a prestigious hub for higher education in Sri Lanka and in the South Asian region with outstanding achievements in education , research , sports, international competitions and expert advice and has significantly contributed to the national economic development.
The Annual Awards Ceremony of the University of Moratuwa was conducted on the 28th of December 2018 under the patronage of the Chancellor of the University, Vidya Jyothi Professor Emeritus KKYW Perera and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. KKCK Perera.
Professor Kemal Deen, a consultant surgeon, an administrator and an academic who was the founder of the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya was invited as the Chief Guest and he delivered the guest speech on "Factors that Make a Good Researcher".
Academic staff and students of the University of Moratuwa were appreciated with 178 awards at this ceremony. The categories of awards and the number of recipients for each category are as follows;
• Appreciation of outstanding research performance by academic staff - 88 Awards
• Acknowledging student excellence - 67 Awards
• Recognition of international and national awards received by staff and students - 23 Awards
The university has long recognized that the academic staff and students benefit from research and that it enriches the learning process beyond the class room. Accordingly, the university strives to motivate researchers to engage in research and related studies. The university has already established research units for all Faculties with the objective of disseminating knowledge gained through research and to promote research among faculty members and students. Research carried out so far has been instrumental in uplifting the image of the University of Moratuwa as a leading research institute in the South Asian region. In appreciation of their good work 88 academic staff received awards for research performance.
In acknowledging student excellence, the Grade Point Average (GPA) obtained at the semester examinations were considered. Fifty eight (58) students were appreciated and were awarded a certificate and a cash award.
The University always encourages academics and students to participate in both international and national level competitions by officially recognizing their unique achievements in the fields of education, innovation, research and publications. Accordingly, four academic staff members and ten students were recognized at the Annual Award Ceremony this year for the National and International Awards they had received.
The ceremony was successfully completed marking a well-rounded year of achievements for the University of Moratuwa.
