The University of Moratuwa (UoM) celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2022, having earned the University status on 15th February 1972.
The UoM, which traces its humble beginnings to 1972, as a small institution in Katubedda, is now at the forefront of tertiary education in Sri Lanka providing Architecture, Business, Engineering, Information Technology and Medical Education for approximately 10,000 students in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The establishment proudly boasts of some of the most highly-qualified lecturers in their respective fields, comprising both UoM alumni and those who have earned their Degrees and Postgraduate Degrees overseas.
The UoM currently conducts 15 undergraduate programmes and over 45 postgraduate courses that offer the students the opportunity to gain a quality tertiary education in Sri Lanka. Today, the University is a fully-fledged system that not only encompasses academic education but also offers its students the opportunity to shine in sports and other extracurricular activities in the spheres of the Performing and Creative Arts, the Humanities and the Sciences. While the University takes pride in its progress over the years, its greatest asset is the ability to look into the future, anticipating developments that are yet to take place in the professional world, while preparing its students to meet those demands. In this vein, UoM students are encouraged to participate in many local and international events and programmes that expose them to a wide variety of skills, people, and places. UoM Academic Staff experiences the freedom to learn and grow in their respective fields, undertaking research and thereby opening new doors for themselves and the students, alike. Each year, UoM students and the lecturers are recognized for their achievements at national and international levels, which is a testament to the brighter future the University pledges to all, who enter through its gates.
To celebrate its achievements over the last 50 years in higher education, the Golden Jubilee Commemorative Ceremony of the University was held on 29th December 2022, from 2.30 p.m. at the Auditorium of the Rubert Peiris Building, Faculty of Architecture.
The Chancellor of the University, Vidya Jyothi Emeritus Professor K.K.Y.W. Perera participated as the Chief Guest whereas the keynote address was delivered by renowned Chartered Electrical Engineer and Emeritus Professor J.R. Lucas. To mark this important milestone, a publication and the newly revamped University website were launched.
The first copy of the Golden Jubilee Publication was handed over to the Chancellor while the official copy was handed over to the Registrar of the University. The new UoM website was launched by Senior Professor Gihan Dias, a Professor in Computer Science & Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. The event also shared the news of the launch of the Golden Jubilee Commemorative Stamp and the First-Day Cover in January 2023. All commemorative stamp competition participants and the final design team were acknowledged at the event.
The staff, students, alumni and other well-wishers of the University were provided the opportunity to witness the event virtually via Zoom platform and the UoM YouTube Channel.
