The University of Moratuwa (UoM), recognized as the premier technological university of Sri Lanka, continues to be a top choice for students aspiring to excel in fields such as Engineering, Architecture, Information Technology, Business, and Medicine. Known for producing leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs, the University has cemented its reputation as a beacon of academic and research excellence.
Since 2015, the University's research output has seen remarkable growth, positioning the University of Moratuwa among the top three institutions in Sri Lanka in terms of scholarly output and citation impact.
A 2023 tracer survey on graduate employment patterns revealed that 85.7% of UoM graduates were employed at the time of their convocation, underscoring the strong demand for its graduates in the job market.
The University of Moratuwa Awards Ceremony, a testament to the commitment of the University to fostering a culture of excellence and innovation in higher education, was successfully held on 8th October 2024 at its Faculty of Engineering Multi-purpose Building Complex, under the patronage of Senior Professor N.D. Gunawardena, Vice-Chancellor of the University. The event was attended by the Officers of the University, academic and administrative staff, students and their parents, as well as distinguished invitees, including generous donors who sponsored numerous student awards.
In his welcome speech, the Vice-Chancellor Senior Professor N.D. Gunawardena emphasized the importance of celebrating academic excellence and innovative research, highlighting that these achievements embody the spirit and values of the University. He noted that the UoM mission is to provide transformative education, conduct impactful research, and contribute to advancements in science, technology, and socio-economic development for sustainable progress.
Professor Gunawardena acknowledged that research is integral to the educational framework at the University, enriching the curriculum with the latest discoveries and equipping students with relevant skills for today’s dynamic job market. He also emphasized the significant role research plays in addressing societal challenges, generating evidence-based solutions, and shaping policies in critical areas such as healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development. The Vice-Chancellor proudly recognized the outstanding achievements of the UoM students and staff, who received awards for their exceptional academic performance and extracurricular contributions. He expressed gratitude to industry sponsors for their invaluable support and commended researchers for their innovative projects, which have significantly contributed to the advancement of science and society.
During the ceremony, the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus was conferred upon 12 distinguished Professors in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the University and their respective fields.
Awards presented at the ceremony also included:
- Outstanding Research Performance for 2022: Recognition of exemplary contributions by 126 academic staff.
- Student Awards: 144 certificates and cash awards were presented to 120 students from the intakes of 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 of the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Architecture for their remarkable academic and extra-curricular performance.
