IEEE RO-MAN CONFERENCE: THE NANJING CITY PRIZES

Bhagya Samarakoon, a research student in the Intelligent Service Rbhagya1obotics Group, Department of Electrical Engineering was awarded the Nanjing City prize for the research paper entitled "Replicating Natural Approaching behavior of Humans for Improving Robot's Approach toward Two persons During a Conversation" published in 27th IEEE International Conference on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN) held from Aug 27-31. The city of Nanjing has offered 10 "Robotics Innovation Awards" to encourage innovation and advances in Science and robotics in particular by sponsoring each of the awardees with a value of 10000 Yuans (US$1500). The award winners were chosen on the basis of originality, usefulness and scientific and technical soundness of the contribution. The manuscript was authored by Bhagya Samarakoon and Dr. Viraj Muthugala under the supervision of Dr. Buddhika Jayasekara.

INTELLIGENT SERVICE ROBOTICS GROUP PRESENT PAPERS AT IEEE RO-MAN CONFERENCE

When

Four members of the Intelligent Service Robotics Group of the Department of Electrical Engineering have presented research papers at 27th IEEE International Conference on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN) held from Aug 27-31, Nanjing and Tai'an, China. They are working on development of MIRob (Moratuwa Intelligent Robot), an Intelligent service robot for domestic environments under the Supervision of Dr. Buddhika Jayasekara. It is commendable that the researchers of the Department of Electrical Engineering were able to present their work at this premier forum of the Human - Robot Interaction (HRI) field. These research were funded by the Senate Research Grants No: SRC/CAP/2017/03 and SRC/LT/2018/20.

COMPLETION OF PHD BY VIRAJ MUTHUGALA

When

Department of Electrical Engineering congratulates, Dr. Viraj Muthugala, for successful completion of the PhD degree under the supervision of Dr. Buddhika Jayasekara. This is the first PhD of the intelligent service robotics group, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa. It is commendable that you have achieved more than typical international level of research outcome in Robotics field with an exceptional list of publications including flagship conferences like IEEE ICRA and IROS. Furthermore, we would like to thank you for the hard work in establishing state of art facilities in service robotics with the funding from SRC Capital grants and guiding the junior students of service robotics group of the Department during last four years.
