Development of Wall Putty for Tropics Using Drinking Water Treat- ment Plant Waste Alum Sludge
Supervisor: Prof. H.U. Halwatura Department: Civil Engineering Faculty: Engineering In drinking water treatment plants, surface water is treated to remove impurities by adding Aluminium Sulphate (Al2(SO4)3) (Alum). In the end, a waste alum sludge is generated and direct disposal is prohibited due to environmental issues. The increasing amount of alum sludge production has considerable environmental and economic concerns in most countries and looking for a sustainable solution. |

In this research properties of the sludge were identified. The sludge has high shrinkage and cannot be powdered due to alum activation. Following a series of experiments, a method was developed to produce dry powdered sludge, overcoming alum activation. Following historical evidence of clay-based plasters, a wall putty was developed with the dry powdered sludge incorporating ancient technologies. The invented wall putty is a sustainable solution for waste alum sludge generation and a sustainable construction material consisting of environmentally and occupant-friendly performances. Abstract
